Program & My Role
Dock3 – The Startup Lab is an entrepreneurship program at Roma Tre University, aimed at empowering students, alumni, and professionals to develop and validate innovative business ideas. Each year, the program trains numerous participants, fostering the creation of several promising startups.
As part of this program, our group focused on conceptualizing and developing AiMuse.
Our team consisted of four members, each contributing unique expertise to the project. My primary role was to design and refine the platform's user experience while also supporting research and critical tasks essential to the project's advancement. By leveraging insights from user surveys and data analysis, I created designs that aligned closely with user needs and preferences. Below, I will focus exclusively on the design aspects of the project.
Problem
The survey, conducted with over 40 participants, identified the key challenges people face in discovering cultural events:
Word of Mouth: Many rely on recommendations from friends, limiting the scope of activities discovered.
Time-Consuming Searches: Navigating through various platforms is inefficient and frustrating.
Missed Events: Despite efforts, people often fail to identify events that align with their interests.
Lack of Comprehensive Tools: Traditional platforms often prioritize popular spots, neglecting enriching yet lesser-known cultural experiences.
The study emphasizes the need for a personalized, user-friendly, and detailed solution to address these gaps.
Solution
An AI-Driven Cultural Exploration App that analyzes users' tastes and preferences to tailor personalized recommendations for cultural activities and hidden gems into a comprehensive centralized experience.
The app will also enable users to plan and share cultural adventures with friends based on shared interests, fostering social connections and enhancing the experience through group participation.
Competitors
Existing Competitors
Traditional Travel Guides: These provide generalized recommendations but lack personalization.
Event Discovery Platforms: Popular platforms often focus on mainstream events, missing out on niche cultural experiences.
Social Media: While useful for discovering events, social media platforms are not tailored to users’ specific interests.
AiMuse’s Competitive Advantages
AI-Driven Personalization: Recommendations evolve based on users’ cultural profiles.
Social Integration: Facilitates collaborative planning of cultural activities with friends and family.
User Research
Scenario
Maria wants to plan a cultural weekend with her friends. Using AiMuse, she sets her preferences, explores recommendations, and books a museum tour and a workshop—all within minutes, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience.
Name Selection
The first step was selecting a suitable name for our startup. We brainstormed several options, including MuseMe (a playful name suggesting the app inspires users with activity ideas) and WhoDo, Wudo, Wodo, and Wudoo (derived from "Who do?" or "You do"). After careful consideration, we decided on AiMuse as the app's name, combining the elements of AI, Muse (to inspire), and Amuse (to bring enjoyment), perfectly reflecting the essence of our application.
Visual Identity
The AiMuse project began without a predefined visual identity, offering a blank canvas to explore creative possibilities in color, form, and layout. To establish a strong foundation, I conducted benchmarking and competitor analysis, gaining valuable insights into design standards and emerging trends in the field.
I initiated the design process by sketching logo concepts that captured the essence of AiMuse’s mission: inspiring cultural discovery. These initial ideas evolved into four digitized logo concepts, each highlighting a unique aspect of the brand. Through discussions and feedback, we collaboratively refined the designs and finalized a minimalistic logo that resonated with the app’s goals. This iterative process not only shaped AiMuse’s visual identity but also ensured it aligned seamlessly with the app’s purpose and audience.
Colors
The green and grey color scheme for AiMuse reflects the app's mission and appeals to its target audience.
Green symbolizes growth, harmony, and creativity, aligning with the app's focus on enriching cultural exploration and inspiring trust and relaxation.
Grey adds a neutral, modern, and elegant backdrop, highlighting content without distraction.
Together, these colors create a balanced, professional, and inviting interface that supports stress-free cultural discovery.
Wireframing
I began by creating wireframes for the key and most critical pages to visualize how the app could effectively address user needs. The primary focus was on designing the Home, User Profile, Event Details, and Information Pages, along with the Profiles Unification Feature. These pages posed the most significant challenges, as they required a seamless balance between functionality and user experience to ensure the app effectively conveyed its purpose and value.
MVP
In developing the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for AiMuse, we focused on delivering core functionalities to validate our concept and gather user feedback. The key components of our MVP included:
User Registration and Profile Creation: Enabled users to sign up and establish personal profiles, capturing essential information to facilitate personalized recommendations.
Personalized Event Recommendations: Leveraged AI algorithms to analyze user preferences and suggest cultural events tailored to individual interests.
Event Discovery and Details: Provided a curated list of cultural events with comprehensive details, allowing users to explore and select activities of interest.
Social Planning Features: Allowed users to plan and coordinate cultural outings with friends or family, enhancing the communal experience.
Feedback Mechanism: Incorporated a system for users to provide feedback on recommendations and overall app experience, facilitating continuous improvement.
By concentrating on these fundamental features, we aimed to address the primary challenges users face in discovering and engaging with cultural events, while laying a solid foundation for future enhancements based on user insights.
Result
Despite our dedicated efforts in developing AiMuse, the project did not garner the attention or funding we had hoped for during the competition, which ultimately hindered its continuation. While this outcome was disappointing, it is a common challenge in the startup ecosystem.
This experience proved invaluable in enhancing my teamwork skills and crisis management abilities. It also significantly refined my design vision, enabling me to develop a keener eye for detail and a more thoughtful approach to my work.
